Restorative Dentistry

As techniques in the dental profession continue to advance and become more and more sophisticated, patients are beginning to realise just how much can be achieved to transform their oral health and aesthetics. As patients expectations increase, more emphasis is being placed on a more holistic approach to dentistry, that takes an overview of different specialisms and offer patients a programme of treatment to meet their needs.

This holistic view of dentistry is the keystone to Restorative Dentistry. As more products, services and treatments emerge onto the dental market, customers are increasingly reliant on dentists to adopt a consultative approach, making recommendations based on their knowledge of what can be achieved.

What does the job involve?

Restorative dentistry brings together endodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics in a single offering to patients. It therefore covers restoration work to the gums, the outer teeth and the inner pulp. Whether the patient suffers from chronic gum disease, from missing teeth or from infected, decaying teeth – or, in fact, if their teeth have deteriorated to such an extent that they suffer from all three – then their teeth can be restored.

Restorative dentistry allows practices to focus on more than simply repairing problems, such as decay or gum disease. It allows them to give patients a comprehensive programme of treatment that gives them a visibly better outcome. Many practices that offer restorative dentistry also offer additional treatments and services, such as the latest tooth whitening techniques.

What qualifications do you need?

Restorative dentists who have expertise in all three areas of endodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics will have undergone several years of formal training in addition to the four-year dental degree.

In many cases, dentists with skills in one or two specialist areas can add their skills to practice where they are complemented by the other dentists. This means that patients can still be offered the same consultative service, although different experts may be involved at different stages of the treatment process.

What are the career prospects?

Restorative dentistry is an emerging area of the dental industry. However, as more patients recognise the potential for visibly changing how their teeth and gums look, it is set to grow. The career opportunities are therefore exceptional. Whether you run your own practice, work as a Partner or as an Associate, there is immense potential for dentists with adaptable skills to build their reputations.
